Installing and configuring the Skytap integration for Canvas

The Skytap integration for Canvas must be installed by a Canvas administrator.

Before you begin

Contact Skytap support at support@skytap.com to request a consumer key, shared secret, and configuration URL; these are needed to install the application.

Installation steps

To install the Skytap integration for Canvas
  1. From the Canvas Dashboard, click Admin.
  2. Select the name of the account you want to edit.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Select the Apps tab.

  5. Click the View App Configurations button.
  6. Click the + App button.

  7. The Add App dialog displays.

    Enter the following values:

    Configuration type

    Select By URL.

    Name

    Enter a name for the app (example: Skytap lab environments).

    Consumer key

    Enter the consumer key provided by Skytap support.

    Shared Secret

    Enter the shared secret provided by Skytap support.

    Config URL

    Enter the configuration URL provided by Skytap support.

  8. Click Submit.

Configuration steps

Add Skytap credentials to the application

The Skytap integration for Canvas requires a Skytap user account to create lab environments; any usage associated with the lab environments is tracked to that Skytap user. There are two options for adding the Skytap user account to the application:

  • Enter a Skytap user account for each course.

    This is preferred if you want to track and limit usage on a per-course basis. The instructor or administrator must enter a Skytap user account in the course settings; this account is used to create any lab environments in that course. For instructions, see Add Skytap credentials in the course settings.

  • Enter a default Skytap user account in the Skytap application settings.

    This is preferred if you don’t want to create Skytap user accounts for each course or instructor. All lab environments are created with the same Skytap user account. To add the user account in the application settings, use the steps below:

    1. From the Canvas Dashboard, click Admin.
    2. Select the name of the account you want to edit.
    3. Click Skytap.
    4. The Skytap app configuration page loads.

      canvas config Enter the username and API key for the Skytap user account. The Skytap user account must have access to the templates the lab environments will be created from. To locate your username and API key (also called an API security token), see Finding your username and API security token.

    5. Click Submit.

Notes

  • If a default Skytap user account is entered in the application settings, it can be overridden as needed for a specific course.
  • To control spending, assign usage limits to the default Skytap user account and/or the user accounts entered in the course settings.
To add a custom logo to the lab environment module items
  1. From the Dashboard, click Admin.
  2. Select the name of the account you want to edit.
  3. Click Skytap. The Skytap app configuration page loads.

  4. Click Upload Logo.
  5. Click Choose File and select the PNG file you want to add. The image must be 48px tall and 48px wide.
  6. Click Open.
