Troubleshooting automatic shutdown

Automatic shutdown may not work properly if VMware Tools isn’t installed, or if the guest OS isn’t responsive.

VMware Tools isn’t installed (x86 VMs)

The automatic Shutdown power option requires that VMware Tools be installed on x86 Windows and Linux VMs.

VMware Tools isn’t required for Power VMs. Automatic shutdown works for Power VMs with no additional software.

The guest OS may not be responding

The guest OS may be in an unexpected state and unable to shut down correctly. If the guest OS isn’t responding, you may have to correct the guest OS before it will shut down.

Such cases may include:

  • Sleep or hibernate initiated by guest OS settings.
  • System update for the guest OS.
  • Other OS system issue.
